6th snake discovered inside Mississippi courthouse

6th snake discovered inside Mississippi courthouse, Another snake has been found in central Mississippi's main courthouse as the reptiles come out with the increasing spring warmth.

WAPT-TV reported that the clerk's office at the Hinds County Courthouse in downtown Jackson sent in a photo of the small snake that turned up Monday (April 29).

Five other non-venomous brown DeKay's snakes or earth snakes have been found in the courthouse's basement office since April 8.

Former zookeeper Percy King, who was called to identify the snakes, said last week that it is not unusual for DeKay’s snakes to sneak into buildings during the springtime as they wake up from hibernation with the arrival of warmer weather.

The courthouse basement has windows but officials say the windows are tightly sealed. It remains unclear on how the snakes are getting into the building.

Temperatures have reached their highest levels of the season this month so far with a max of 87 degrees recorded on both April 9 and 17. On Monday, the high temperature reached 81 degrees.

The Art Deco-style courthouse was built in 1930 and is topped by a statue of Moses with the Ten Commandments.
