Atlanta area toddler killed by family pit bull

Atlanta area toddler killed by family pit bull, A two-year-old boy was killed by his family's pet pit bull Wednesday in the Atlanta area. According to an April 25 report on the Atlanta Journal Constitution, his mother had gone to the restroom, and when she came out, the child was dead. The pit bull attack happened quickly, and it was immediately obvious that it was fatal.

The pit bull had been a family pet for eight years, and it is not known what prompted the mauling. A neighbor heard the mother run outside screaming, "The dog killed the baby. The dog killed the baby."

According to Dogsbite.org, there were 151 fatalities from pit bull attacks between 2005-2012. That breaks down to one every 19 days. Pit bulls account for 60% of total recorded deaths during this same time period.

The dog’s fate is not known; it has been taken to a shelter to be evaluated for overall health and temperament. It is interesting to note that Dogsbite.org reports that in the first eight months of 2011, almost half of the pit bull fatalities were the dog’s owner and primary handler.
