DEA Drug Take-back day this Saturday

DEA Drug Take-back day this Saturday, The Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) has organized a day to collect old prescription medications. The collection day, officially called the “National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day,” is on April 27, 2013.

The collection of prescription medications and antibiotics helps keep our water supply pure, since most wastewater treatment plants cannot remove prescription medicines from the waste water (sanitary sewer system). Therefore, the untreated medications pass back into the drinking water which we consume.

In addition, when antibiotics are used or disposed of in sanitary sewers, the bacteria in the drinking water systems build up an immunity to the antibiotics. When this water is discharged back into the environment, the antibiotic resistant bacteria are also discharged. This is why the collection of medications and antibiotics is a prudent idea.
