Nothing found in bomb search after threatening call to Daytona bank Monday, Daytona Beach Police handled a bomb threat at a local bank Monday morning that had similarities to a bomb threat made to a local grocery store Saturday. No one was hurt in either incident.
A report on the Daytona Beach Police website says the bomb threat Monday morning was received by phone at the Fifth Third Bank at 444 Seabreeze Avenue.
Police say a man called the bank around 9:30 and said a bomb was in the building, and the bank “…needed to wire $1000.00 via Western Union to an account overseas.”
A man who called a beachside Publix in Daytona over the weekend made similar threats about a bomb after demanding money be wired overseas.
In both cases the wire transfers were sent and the buildings were evacuated, and the wire transfers were cancelled once it was determined no bombs were present.
The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office bomb squad dogs checked the bank Monday and the all clear was issued around 11 a.m. There were around 100 bank customers and workers evacuated while the building was checked.
The Volusia County Sheriff’s Office bomb squad was also called out over the weekend for a bomb threat at the Winn Dixie at 2200 South Atlantic Avenue Saturday morning in Daytona Beach Shores, and for a backpack discovered in Orange City possibly related to a Seminole County bank robbery in which a bomb was threatened.
Daytona Beach Police said that Monday’s incident is being investigated by the Daytona Beach Police Criminal Investigation Division and by the F.B.I.
