Senator comes out: Senator comes out as Nevada approves same-sex marriage

Senator comes out: Senator comes out as Nevada approves same-sex marriage, On the evening of Monday, April 22, 2013, the state Senate in Nevada voted to repeal an amendment to the Constitution that banned gay marriage. It was voted to replace it with one that required Nevada to recognize same-sex marriage. That's huge news, but the bigger news came from Sen. Kelvin Atkinson, D-North Las Vegas, who announced that he himself is gay, per the USA Today.

“I’m black. I’m gay,” Atkinson told the assembly, according to the Las Vegas Sun. “I know this is the first time many of you have heard me say that I am a black, gay male.”

Atkinson is a young single father and native of Chicago. He has served as a Democratic member of the state's legislature for over a decade.

This revelation comes as the country awaits rulings from the Supreme Court on the Defense of Marriage Act and Proposition 8. Many states are rushing as fast as they can to reform their own marriage regulations and get them out there first.

With that said and Nevada passing its reform, "Senator comes out" began trending on Tuesday, April 23, 2013, and Atkinson is proud of it.

The often funny and free-spirited Atkinson brought the news forth with the same exuberance that he does on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. As the bill was going to the floor, Atkinson shared a post stating:

“The marriage equality bill is being heard is the Senate NOW…stay tuned for the results. *fingers crossed*”
