NYC smoking age: Proposed law to raise cigarette purchase age from 18 to 21, In the latest move to bring health awareness to residents of New York City, city legislators are considering a law to bump up the legal age to purchase cigarettes from 18 to 21.
CBS News carried the April 23 report, which announced the proposed cigarette crack down in our nation's largest city.
“By one estimate, raising the smoking age to 21 could reduce the rate among 18 to 20 year olds by 55 percent, that will literally save lives," New York City Council Speaker Christine Quinn said to CBS station WCBS in New York.
Another bill being proposed would set the minimum price for a pack of cigarettes at $10.50. The two bills are specifically aimed at curbing youth smoking, but the overall effect of the bills should also highlight the dangers of smoking.
Under federal law, no one under 18 can buy tobacco anywhere in the country. Some states – such as Alabama, Alaska, New Jersey and Utah – have already raised the age to 19.
The proposed legislation comes shortly after a judge halted NYC Mayor Bloomberg’s ban on large sugary drinks. Previously, Mayor Bloomberg asked for restrictions on certain trans-fats and salty foods.
