Three years later, the mystery of Gilgo Beach remains, It has now been three years since the remains of several young women were discovered along the desolate stretch of land along Ocean Parkway at Gilgo Beach, in Suffolk County.
Although time has passed, interest in the case remains, especially among Long Islanders who would like to see this case solved. Since the search along the beach began, back in late 2010, several other bodies have been found in the same area, including remains of a young man and a baby.
The close location of these corpses in the same area have led many to believe these murders may well be the work of a serial killer, though police do not seem to be any closer to finding the "Gilgo Beach Serial Killer" responsible for the crimes than they were several years ago.
Still, the case (and the infamous area) still manages to enter the news, making it fresh in the minds of New Yorkers everywhere. Back in March, news emerged that police were looking along Gilgo Beach for a missing New York City woman in the area, after some of her personal belongings were found along that stretch of land. However, that missing young woman is not believed to be in any way connected to the ten bodies that have already been found in the area.
The search in Gilgo Beach began back in Spring 2010 following the disappearance of Shannan Gilbert, a New Jersey woman who went missing after she met a client who lived in the area.
The remains of Gilbert, who worked as an escort, were not found until 2011. However, during the search for her remains, the remains of four other missing young women turned up. Maureen Brainard of Norwich, Connecticut, Megan Waterman of Scarborough, Maine, Melissa Barthelemy, of the Bronx, and Amber Costello, of North Babylon were all escorts like Gilbert, and were believed to have advertised their services on the website Craigslist.
The skull of a fifth woman, another sex worker named Jessica Taylor, was also later found in the area. Taylor had been killed in 2003, when her other remains were found in Manorville, New York, miles away from Gilgo. The remains of an unidentified woman, man, and a toddler have still not been identified.
Many have said that authorities are not serious about solving this case because the women who were found did work as sex workers. However, these women were all someone's daughter, mother, or loved one. These women deserve to have their cases solved, and hopefully their families soon get the answers they deserve.
